Street Sudal - Thenga Manga Pattani Sundal

Thenga Manga Pattani Sundal has always been my childhood food crush. Whenever I eat this, it takes me to a different time and place (of course Karaikudi). Everyone from Karaikudi must have fell in love with this street side sundal, which is been there for more than 3 generations now (Near Periyar Statue - In case if you are planning to visit Karaikudi)

Below is the recipe which I have created that tastes 99% equivalent to the one we get in Karaikudi.

Serving Size : 2-3 people
Cooking Time : 25 minutes

Ingredients:

1. Dried Yellow Peas - 1 cup
2. Onion - Half of 1 big onion
    Tomato - 1 medium sized
    Garlic - 2
    Ginger - 1 piece
Greenchilly - 2 based on spice level.
3. Chilly powder - 1/4 tsp
4. Cumin Powder - 1 tsp
5. Garam Masala - 1 tsp
6. Salt - as needed
7. Chopped Onion
8. Sliced Coconut - 1/3 cup
9. Sliced Mango - less than 1/3 cup
10. Corriander leaves

Steps:

1. Soak dried yellow peas overnight or for 5 hours. Add salt and pressure cook for 5-6 whistles.

2. Grind onion, tomato, garlic, ginger and green chilly.

3. In a pan, add oil, add the ground masala and cook for 5-10 mins till the oil oozes out. Keep the flame in medium to low so that the masala get cooked well.

4. Add the pressure cooked peas and mix well, you can mash few peas for consistency and taste.

5. Add chilly powder, garam masala and cumin powder. Mix and cook for 5 - 10 minutes
and keep it in low flame for few more minutes.

6. Switch off the flame and add sliced coconut, mango and cilantro. (Onion is optional)

Mix well and it is ready to serve. You can eat this as a evening snack or as a side to rice and Chapathi.
