Meen Pollichathu

Fish has always been my favorite and is considered as a delicacy in many parts of Coastal India. This recipe is from such a place called Kerala. I got this recipe from a chef during our honeymoon at Munnar. He made this just for us and I still remember that taste. It was heavenly delicious!!

Cooking Time : 45 min
Serving Size : 3-4 People

Ingredients

For Marination:

Fish - Karimeen(Pearl Spot)-5 or Pomfret - 2
Chilly Powder - 1 tbsp
Crushed Garlic - 2
lemon juice - 1 tsp
salt - as needed

For Masala:

Onion : 1 big sized finely chopped
Tomato : 1-2 medium sized
Chilly : 4 finely chopped
Chilly Powder: 1tbsp
Corriander Powder : 1 tsp
Garam Masala powder : 1tsp
Pepper Powder : 1 tsp
Ginger Garlic Paste : 1tbsp
Coconut oil
Salt - as needed
lemon juice- 1 tsp
Thick coconut milk - 2 tbsp

Banana leaf - For Wrapping
Cotton thread - To tie the wrap

Steps:

1. Wash and slit the fish(I used pearl spot) on top and bottom side. Marinate the fish with all the ingredients mentioned above under marination section for about 30 minutes. Add 1-2 tbsp of coconut oil in a skillet and shallow fry the fish for about 5 minutes on each side. Remember we are going to fry it again with the banana leaf wrap, so at this step you don't have to cook the fish thoroughly.

2. In a pan, add 1 tbsp of coconut oil, add chopped onions and cook until it become translucent. Then add ginger garlic paste and cook for a minute or two. Now add green chillies and tomato. Cover and cook until tomato becomes mushy. Now it's time to add chilly powder, coriander powder, garam masala powder and pepper powder. Add little water and cook for 5 -10 minutes. Finally add coconut milk and lemon juice. Keep it in low flame for 5 minutes and then turn off the flame. Masala is ready.

3. Wash and Cut the banana leaves for about the size of 12 *12inches for one fish. Turn on the stove and keep the flame in medium, Place the banana leaf on top of the flame and move it on corners for about 15 secs and then turn it to a other side and do the same. This is to remove the moisture and to  not burn the leaf :)

4. Now place the roasted banana leaf on a flat surface, spread 1-2 tbsp of Onion Masala, place the fish on top of the masala and then again spread 1-2 tbsp of masala on top of the fish.(Fish has to be sandwiched between the onion masala) Do the same process for remaining fish as well.

5. With the fish in the center, fold the horizontal sides of the banana leaf then the vertical sides and now run the cotton thread horizontally and vertically couple of times and finally tie both the ends.

6. In a pan, add 2-4 tbsp of coconut oil and once it is hot, add the wrapped fish and cook on medium flame for about 5 minutes on each side.

And finally it's done yaayyy!! I know it's time consuming but worth the try:) Enjoy it with rice or roti!
