Restaurant Style Tiffin Sambar

This is one quick sambar recipe that tastes exactly like a hotel sambar. This tastes delicious even with no veggies. All you need is tomato and onions. Soak the idly in this sambar and just swim in it. Heaven!!



Cooking Time: 20 minutes
Serving Size : 2-3 People

Ingredients:

1. Toor Dal - 150g
2. Onions - 3/4 cup
3. Medium to Large Tomatoes - 1
4. Turmeric powder - 1/4 tsp
5. Hing/Perungayam - 1/2 tsp
6. Salt as needed

For Masala 

1. Channa Dal - 1 Tbsp
2. Coriander Seeds - 1 Tbsp
3. Vendhayam/Fenugreek - 1/2 tsp
4. Red Chilly - 4-5 (increase or decrease based on your spice level)

For Seasoning

1. Oil - 1 Tbsp
2. Cumin Seeds - 1/2 tsp
3. Red Chilly - 1
4. Curry Leaves - as needed

Steps:

1. In a pressure cooker add washed toor dal, a tsp of oil, salt and onions. Pressure cook for 4 whistles.

2. In the meantime, boil the tomato in 1 cup of water. Cook until the skin peels off. Let it cool.

3. Dry roast all the ingredients mentioned under masala for 3-4 minutes until the raw smell goes away. 

4. Grind it to a fine paste.

5. Smash the tomatoes in the water that we boiled.

6. Add the masala paste to the tomato water, Give it a mix and add it to the toor dal.

7. Let it boil for 5 minutes.

8. Temper the seasonings to the sambar.

9. Garnish with Cilantro!
